BOOT CARE TIPS

Quality boots are an investment, one that pays you back season after season if you give them the attention that they deserve. When you're stacking up miles chasing elk around in the backcountry, a little maintenance goes a long way. Proper boot care will keep your leather healthy, the fit consistent, and the waterproofing dependable when the weather sours.

Key things to do when caring for your boots

  • Allow the built up internal moisture within your boots to completely dry out after each use.
    • Mountain boots: Loosen the laces and open the tongues up on to allow for efficient air drying after each use. You can also use a boot dryer, but we recommend the lowest heat setting possible to avoid warping and damaging the toe cap built into the boot.
    • Pac boots: Remove the Thinsulate liners from the boot after each use to all for more efficient air drying. The liners can also be put on a boot dryer at a medium to low heat setting.
  • Brush off as much dirt and mud from your boots as you can after each hunt. Allowing dirt to cake up and dry on the leather of your boots will wear them out much faster than if they are clean.
  • Treat your leather with conditioner as necessary, which will depend on your use. Leather doesn't operate on a calendar, so you should determine the frequency at which you treat your boots based on how often you wear them, what environments they've been used in, and how the leather looks and feels. Roughly every 3-4 months is the sweet spot for the average hunter or outdoorsman, but more miles will more frequent conditioning. Allow your boots to absorb the conditioner overnight and remove any excess in the morning.

What NOT to do when caring for your boots

  • DO NOT expose your boots to any direct heat source such as a wood stove, campfire, or even the lower air vents in your truck. This can damage the leather, warp the internal toe cap in mountain boots, melt parts of the sole, and cause cracking in the rubber. Boots are also prone to shrinking if they are on your feet and are too close to a heat source. We can't stress enough how damaging heat can be if you aren't careful, so be hypervigilant about what kind of temperatures you're exposing your boots to.
  • DO NOT over condition your boots. While treating your boots with conditioner is essential, it's important to use only as much conditioner as necessary. Leaving a caked layer of conditioner on your boots will create a surface that dust and dirt sticks to, which can lead to holes being rubbed into your leather.
  • DO NOT allow petroleum to sit on the rubber of your boots as this can cause cracking.
